Mr. Tien Wong is a tech entrepreneur, CEO, and angel investor. He is Chairman & CEO of Opus8, Inc., a private investment and strategic advisory firm specializing in tech investments and fundraising for alternative investment funds and companies seeking to raise capital. Opus8’s Phoenix Fund makes early stage investments in remarkable fintech, proptech, healthtech, and martech companies that are disrupting their markets and changing the world. Tien is Chairman of Lumious, a Virginia-based EdTech company which provides advanced tech training, mobile e-learning, and software development to Fortune 500 customers. He is also Chairman of Lore, a national provider of IT and business process outsourcing services to commercial and government clients.
In 2012, Tien created the Big Idea CONNECTpreneur Forum, a community of over 16,000 founders, CEOs, angels, VCs, CXOs and other business leaders in the Mid-Atlantic region. The community hosts bi-monthly live Forums with upwards of 600 attendees, as well as bi-weekly virtual online Forums and pitch events with 600-700 attendees. Live and virtual events feature VIP guests, speakers, exciting presenting companies, and the best CXO to CXO networking in the region.
In 1991, Tien co-founded and served as Chairman & CEO of CyberRep, Inc. until its acquisition in 2003 by Affiliated Computer Services, a “Fortune 500”company. CyberRep was one of the world’s largest privately held CRM outsourcing companies, operating 9 customer interaction centers throughout the USA with over 2,300 employees and $80 million in revenue. Today, the CyberRep/ACS business unit is a $2 billion division of Xerox. CyberRep garnered multiple prestigious awards including Customer Inter@ction Solutions magazine's MVP Quality Award and Customer Interface magazine's ACCE (Award for Call Center Excellence), as well as INC. magazine's 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000's "Inc. 500" recognition as the 51st, 53rd, 72nd and 408th fastest growing private company in the USA, respectively. CyberRep was profitable for 11 consecutive years and was backed by Allied Capital Corporation, a $5 billion investment company.
A recognized international expert in CRM, direct marketing, and BPO, Tien has presented at dozens of conferences around the world. He has also provided industry commentary on the ABC, Fox, NBC, CNBC, Maryland Public Television, and China’s CCTV networks, as well as for publications such as Time Magazine, The Washington Post, Inc. Magazine, and Success Magazine.
Tien received the 2001 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for Greater Washington and the 2003 Ernst & Young Performance Excellence Award. He was inducted into the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Hall of Fame. He was recognized by Washingtonian magazine as a “Tech Titan” in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Tien is a 2012 and 2013 Washington Business Journal "Power 100" selection as one of the region's most influential leaders, a three-time SmartCEO Magazine selection as a "Smart100" CEO ('09, '10 and '11), a 2013 InTheCapital "Fifty on Fire" awardee, community service honoree as a member of Greater DC Cares 2009 "Class of Change” and The Gazette of Politics and Business selection in 2010 as one of "25 CEOs You Need to Know." He is a member of YPO and is a frequent guest lecturer on entrepreneurship, leadership, venture capital, and private equity at the University of Maryland and Georgetown University, where he is an Entrepreneur in Residence.
Tien was appointed by Governor Martin O'Malley to the 9-member Maryland Venture Fund Authority which oversees $84 million in venture capital allocations; he serves on the Boards of Directors of the Montgomery County (MD) Economic Development Corp. and Junior Achievement of Greater Washington. He serves on the Investment Advisory Board of the Commonwealth of Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology GAP Fund and is a Mentor at the Mach37 Cybersecurity Accelerator and Conscious Venture Labs. In the past, he has served as Treasurer and National Board Member of the American Teleservices Association; Chairman of the Executive Leadership Committee for the Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE); Trustee of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and on the Boards of the Maryland Tech Council, Association for Corporate Growth - National Capital, Digital DC Tech Fund, Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Potomac Officer’s Club, Trade-Up Capital Fund, Monte Jade Science and Technology Association, FounderCorps, and Startup Maryland. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College.
Keith Gillard is an entrepreneur and venture capitalist who has focused the past two decades on cleantech and advanced materials start-ups. Mr. Gillard has provided leadership on the board of directors of dozens of companies, funds, and not-for-profit organizations. He is a proven fund-raiser, deal-maker, and business development matchmaker with an extensive international network, having close relationships with multinational organizations across North America, Asia, and Europe.
From 2010-2020, Mr. Gillard was General Partner of Pangaea Ventures Ltd., where he was a manager of Pangaea Ventures Fund III and IV. During this period, Pangaea's capital under management increased from $40M to $162M USD, the number of Strategic LPs grew from 7 to 25, and Pangaea secured its first financial institution as an LP. Mr. Gillard worked to generate and evaluate hundreds of new advanced materials opportunities, and led Pangaea's investment efforts in agricultural technologies.
From 2006-2010, Mr. Gillard served as President of BASF Venture Capital America. He was responsible for the establishment of the Silicon Valley office, as well as a dozen direct and fund investments. From 2001-2006, Mr. Gillard was with Mitsubishi Corporation and responsible for venture investment and business development activities with a specific focus on cleantech. Prior to joining Mitsubishi, Mr. Gillard began his career in investment banking, structuring mergers and acquisitions as well as manufacturing technology joint ventures into China. In the '90's, he was a full-time entrepreneur in software and media.
Mr. Gillard is chairman of the Foresight Cleantech Accelerator Centre and a director of the Canadian Venture Capital Association. He has advised the World Economic Forum on collaborative innovation in chemicals and materials, and serves as an expert panelist for the Global Cleantech 100. He has served as chairman of Vestaron Corporation and as director of NewLeaf Symbiotics, Hazel Technologies, SDC Materials, Sciona, Advanced BioNutrition, Ultracell, and other companies. He is the co-author of “Inside the Minds: Energy Venture Capital Best Practices”, published in 2008 by Aspatore Books. Outside of work, he is a high-energy father of three, a cyclist, and a twice-nominated Canadian Independent Music Award winner.
Owen Meyer is a Founder and Managing Partner of Meyer Equity, an investment holding company focused on the technology industry. Owen held multiple Board positions in technology companies as well as advised early-stage venture-backed technology businesses. Prior to that, he served in a finance role at a late-stage technology company, Quantcast. Owen was an investment banking analyst for Societe Generale and started his career as a public equity analyst for Harvest Management. He holds Executive Certificates from Harvard Business School and MIT Sloan School focusing on Artificial Intelligence, IoT, Blockchain, Entrepreneurship, and Neuroscience. He graduated early from Stony Brook University in 2011, with a dual B.S. in Applied Mathematics (#1 in class) and Finance.
